8 Reasons Why My Anxiety Is Pointless and Foolish

Some great reminders here from Justin Taylor:

1. God is near me to help me.

Philippians 4:5-6: “The Lord is at hand; [therefore] do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.”

2. God cares for me.

1 Peter 5:7: “. . . casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”

3. My Father in heaven knows all my needs and will supply all my needs.

Right Desires

The desire to acquire treasures is not wrong, as long as we are storing them in heaven and not on earth.

[19] “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, [20] but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal.
(Matthew 6:19-20 ESV)

The desire for joy and pleasure is not wrong, as long as we seek it in God and not in the world.

[11] You make known to me the path of life;
in your presence there is fullness of joy;
at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
(Psalm 16:11 ESV)

The desire to be great is not wrong, if we desire to be great in the Kingdom of God and not in the world.

[43] But it shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, [44] and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all.
(Mark 10:43-44 ESV) Read more »

Why does God always demand praise?

In his book, Reflections on the Psalms (Chapter ix), C.S. Lewis outlines how he came to understand the necessity of praising God:

I had not noticed either that just as men spontaneously praise whatever they value, so they spontaneously urge us to join them in praising it: “Isn’t she lovely? Wasn’t it glorious? Don’t you think that magnificent?” The Psalmists in telling everyone to praise God are doing what all men do when they speak of what they care about. Read more »

Killing Sin by Abiding in the Word

Last Sunday, Pastor Carson pointed to John’s exhortation to ‘young men’ in 1 John 2:14, to encourage us to have God’s word abide in us:

[14] I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young men, because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one. (1 John 2:14 ESV) Read more »

Why We Find Pride in Others So Annoying

There is one vice of which no man in the world is free; which every one in the world loathes when he sees it in someone else; and of which hardly any people, except Christians, ever imagine that they are guilty themselves.

I have heard people admit that they are bad-tempered, or that they cannot keep their heads about girls or drink, or even that they are cowards.

I do not think I have ever heard anyone who was not a Christian accuse himself of this vice. Read more »

Advice for New Christians

Colin Adams offers some advice for new Christians.

1. Find an older Christian who will commit to discipling you on a regular basis.

2. Attend church regularly.

3. Make sure you understand the gospel. Clarify this before ‘moving on’ to other things. But don’t stay away too long! Learn to live a ‘gospel centred life’. Read more »

On Reading

Looking over everything I’ve bookmarked recently, I noticed a few articles and quotes related to reading. I don’t just mean reading the Bible, though that is our main priority. I mean reading books, commentaries, articles etc. from Christian and non-Christian authors, scholars and pastors, both past and present. Read more »

What God Wants From His People

God is more interested in our holiness than in our comfort. He more greatly delights in the integrity and purity of his church than in the material well-being of its members. He shows himself more clearly to men and women who enjoy him and obey him than to men and women whose horizons revolve around good jobs, nice houses, and reasonable health. He is far more committed to building a corporate “temple’ in which his Spirit dwells than he is in preserving our reputations. He is more vitally disposed to display his grace than to flatter our intelligence. Read more »
